Inspiring Story of the Month Featuring Talor Joseph

More Than a Game: Talor Joseph Finds Purpose on the Ice

Hockey is more than a game—it’s a test of perseverance, faith, and character. Few embody this better than Talor Joseph, a goaltender for the Huntsville Havoc in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). For Talor, hockey was once his identity, but over time, it has become something far greater—a mission field where faith and purpose take center stage.

His journey through hockey was anything but smooth, as the sport’s politics and being the first in his family to play created a steep learning curve. Through sheer determination, he clawed his way onto a top junior team, only to face devastating setbacks, including a knee injury that cost him Division I offers and professional scouting opportunities. Just as he was looking to bounce back, he was hit by a drunk driver, leaving him unable to train for months and forcing him to confront an uncertain future.

Raised in a Christian household, Talor had always known about God, but it wasn’t until he faced trials that his faith became truly his own. Reflecting on those struggles, he recalls, “I remember feeling empty, knowing there had to be more. Then God got a hold of my heart.” At 23, Talor rededicated his life to Christ. From that moment on, hockey was no longer just about personal achievements—it became a platform to share the gospel and impact lives.

One of Talor Joseph’s defining moments came when he was traded to a new team. Though difficult and humbling, he embraced the challenge, believing he was called there for a reason. It was these simple words from a mentor, “Someone there needs Jesus,” that inspired him to start a chapel program, leading several teammates to Christ. His impact extended beyond the team—fans who saw him pray after games approached him, leading to deeper conversations and even church visits. Some later admitted they had been contemplating suicide but found hope after accepting Christ. Witnessing these transformations reinforced Talor’s belief that his career was about more than hockey—it was a ministry.

Talor’s journey continued with unexpected opportunities and challenges. At one point questioning his next move, he found clarity in Mark 16:15, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” This confirmation gave him the confidence to move forward. Soon after joining his new team, he met a teammate who had recently committed his life to Christ. Throughout the season, they encouraged and strengthened each other’s faith, and by the season’s end, his teammate was baptized.

Now, at 30 years old, Talor continues his professional career with a renewed perspective. Hockey is no longer just about how far he can go or what he can achieve—it’s about surrendering to God’s plan and trusting Him to use the game for a greater purpose. “God, I love this game. Use me wherever You want me,” he prays. Instead of focusing on the obstacles, he chooses to trust that every situation happens for a reason. His mission is to be an example of faith, perseverance, and purpose, believing that God places him exactly where he needs to be.
