From Adversity to Leadership: Sam Feamster’s Journey of Faith and esilience

In 2022, Sam Feamster joined our first-ever Confidence Group. At the time, Sam was a 20-year-old junior hockey player facing significant adversity in his career. Despite the challenges, he was a standout leader in his league and on the cusp of stepping into College Hockey. During the Confidence Group, Sam began taking bold steps in his faith journey—embracing his identity in Christ, journaling Scripture, confronting negative thoughts, and learning to be honest with God at a heart level.

Sam reflected, “It was going through that Confidence Group where I really began to make my faith my own.”

Fast forward to today, and Sam now plays College Hockey at Liberty University, where he has served as Team Captain since May 2024. But this season, adversity struck again. A lower body injury sidelined him for multiple games, but Sam’s response has been nothing short of inspiring. Rather than allowing frustration or disappointment to define him, Sam has chosen to surrender the situation to God. “As soon as it happened, as frustrated as I was by it, I surrendered it to God,” Sam shared. Instead of letting the injury derail his focus, Sam has creatively found ways to continue improving. If he can’t skate, he’s studying game film. If he can’t bike or run, he’s working on stickhandling. He’s not just focused on his own progress—he’s actively leading his team and pushing them forward as they prepare for Nationals.

This month, Sam is leading a 30-Day Identity Challenge group, encouraging his teammates to stand firm in their own identity in Christ. It’s a powerful example of how he continues to lead by example, inspiring others to trust in God’s plan, even in the face of challenges.

Sam’s story is a testament to the strength that comes from trusting God through adversity. Isaiah 26:3-4 reminds us: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.” Sam is living out this promise as a Competitor for Christ—choosing to maintain joy, peace, and purpose, no matter the setbacks. No injury can steal his joy, and nothing will stop him from using his sport to make an eternal impact.
